TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY

Richard Ashcroft (*1971 Liverpool) aka ASHWAN describes his work as a visual Tao of boom-bap sound. He creates objects: physical, solid and with a strong presence.
His art harks back to a time when the social breakdown of cities and the ever-widening social divide led to a veritable explosion of color. His works move fluidly between two- and three-dimensionality, conjuring up images of a multicultural and often decaying urbanity, such as the destroyed Berlin Wall or the untouched spray-painted parts of the Bronx from the 1970s.
For his Writings/Tags, he uses texts in a repetitive, rhythmic way that is not always easy to decipher, yet manages to communicate the essential energy of a message. In this way, ASHWAN’s art references, remixes and celebrates the bygone era of so-called Golden Age Hip-Hop with sincerity and nostalgia.
ASHWAN received a Masters in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where one of his professors was Pulitzer-winning artist Jerry Saltz and which is known for its successful alumni, including Jeff Koons and Georgia O’Keefe. His work has been shown in a variety of exhibitions and fairs in England, Spain and Germany.
